I am Ji-Young Sul, the 12th President of the Korean Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
Since its founding in 2001, our society has continuously strived to achieve its mission of contributing to the health and happiness of the nation through the best clinical nutrition treatment for 24 years. Through a multidisciplinary approach involving experts from various fields, such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and nutritionists, we have achieved many results by analyzing patients’ complex problems from various angles and providing more effective and comprehensive treatment.
Building on our past achievements, we are committed to tackling even more challenges in the future. We will fortify our structure and collaboration system, ensuring effective communication among experts from diverse fields. Our unwavering commitment to fair and balanced resource distribution will enable us to meet a multitude of needs. Moreover, we will continue to serve as a platform for sharing the latest research trends and clinical knowledge, staying true to our mission.
We will promote research and innovation by publishing academic journals and research support. We must also strengthen international exchanges by establishing cooperative relationships with leading overseas academic organizations and expanding the global network. Furthermore, we will strengthen educational campaigns and promotional activities to inform patients and the general public about the importance of proper nutritional treatment and raise awareness among them.
Our society's success hinges on the active participation and cooperation of our members. We are committed to listening to your diverse opinions and incorporating them into our policies and direction. We highly value the ideas and suggestions you bring to the table, as they are instrumental in fostering a culture of continuous development within our society.

Dear colleagues,
I am Dong Woo Shin, and I am honored to lead the 12th Board of Directors of the Korean Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (KSPEN) starting in June 2024.
With the esteemed President Ji-Young Sul, who has achieved numerous accomplishments since the foundation of the society, and with the support of over 1,000 members, the newly formed Board aims to reach new heights.
In 2001, when the field of clinical nutrition in Korea was virtually non-existent, KSPEN played a pivotal role as the nation’s first multidisciplinary society involving doctors, dietitians, pharmacists, and nurses. Moving forward, we have many challenges including the nutritional suport for patients, recovery of critically ill patients, prehabilitation of patients of potential risk of malnutrition, and the development of new interventional nutrition therapies. However, like many essential medical fields facing difficulties, clinical nutrition is also hindered by obstacles such as the medical insurance system, food and drug management regulations, and various other constraints.
During my term, I will strive to overcome these challenges and ensure that the multidisciplinary nature of our society remains robust, fostering progressive collaboration among doctors, dietitians, pharmacists, and nurses.

• The Korean Society for Parenteral Enteral Nutrition (KSPEN) launched the NST certification project in 2008 to standardize the Nutritional Support Team (NST) practices and ensure they are reflected in medical billing. Over approximately 10 years, from July 2008 to February 2018, 92 hospitals participated in the project, contributing to the calculation of intensive nutritional treatment fees in August 2014. Despite this, the cost of intensive nutritional therapy remained low compared to the time and effort invested in NST activities, leading to a focus on increasing the number of patients served rather than improving quality. To address these issues, the society initiated the 2nd NST certification project in September 2019. This project aims to increase the fees for intensive nutritional treatment and enhance the quality of NST activities.
• Several key changes were introduced in the 2nd NST certification project: the evaluation criteria for initial certification and re-certification have been differentiated, and the certification period has been extended from 3 to 5 years. Hospitals receiving initial certification can use this as preparation for the Ministry of Health and Welfare's medical institution accreditation system, while hospitals undergoing re-certification are encouraged to focus on quality enhancement through continuous quality improvement (QI) activities.
• Furthermore, the long-term goal is for the KSPEN NST certification project to eventually replace the NST component of the Ministry of Health and Welfare's medical institution accreditation system. Through this ongoing certification project, KSPEN aims to expand NST activities both in terms of quantity and quality.
• The KSPEN NST-PEP (Professional Education Program) is the official certification program for NST (Nutrition Support Team), developed by the KSPEN Education Committee. In response to the establishment of insurance coverage for nutrition therapy by NSTs and the growing demand for clinical nutrition education, the program was launched in 2015 and is held 4 to 5 times annually. The curriculum provides essential knowledge of clinical nutrition, practical application of nutritional therapy, and case studies. It is designed to support our members involved in NST consultations.
